In NetHack, the asterisk (*) serves the following purposes:

• * represents rocks, stones and gems.
• On the Rogue level, * represents gold pieces.
• * is used for drawing the digging beam.

• Press * to get a list of your weapons and armor in use.
• When prompted to select an item from your inventory, press * to show the complete list of items, including ones that would otherwise be irrelevant.
• In a menu, press * to select gems and stones.
• Skills flagged with * on the skill screen can be #enhanced once you have gained more levels.
