In Nethack, the dollar sign, $, refers to gold (or zorkmids) and also serves various purposes:

  • In the dungeon, $ represents a pile of gold pieces.
  • Press $ to count the gold in your purse; doing so in a shop additionally displays the debt or credit you have with its shopkeeper, and all relevant values are displayed instantaneously. In any case, the count for your purse is always the same as the one on the status line, and does not include any money which you hid in containers such as a bag. Checking your gold is a free action and will not increment the turn counter.
    • You can also press $ to select gold while in your inventory for certain menus. Menu controls supported by tty and curses interfaces allow you to press certain keys and toggle selection for all items in that particular item group - in practice, only gold ever uses the $ item group.
