Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, hurkles use the h glyph, while hydras use the H glyph. In Hack for PDP-11, the h glyph is given to the homunculus, while the H glyph is given to the hobgoblin. Both monsters retain the glyph for their appearance in Hack 1.0, and continue to use those glyphs as late as NetHack 2.3e.

NetHack 3.0.0 establishes monster classes: the humanoid and giant humanoid classes are each given the h and H glyphs respectively; the homunculus is moved to the imp or minor demon monster class; and the hobgoblin is moved to the orc monster class. From NetHack 3.0.0 to NetHack 3.0.10, the owlbear is part of the giant humanoid monsterclass, and NetHack 3.1.0 groups it with the apelike creatures.
