In NetHack, the angle brackets (< and >) serve the following purposes:

  • < and > represent staircases, while < and > represent ladders. Stairs and ladders represented by left-pointing brackets lead upward, while those represented by right-pointing brackets lead downwards.
  • Press < or > to go up or down a staircase or ladder.
  • Press > while over a hole or trap door to jump into it.
  • When prompted for a direction while applying a pick-axe or zapping a wand, use < or > to direct they action up or down.
  • Press < or > to go back or forward one page in a multi-page menu. This is supported by tty and curses interfaces.
