Name
The word "manes" is both singular and plural - there is no such monster as a mane. This is because the word is imported directly from Latin ("manes"), where the rules of pluralisation are different.
Strategy
It is an exceptionally unfortunate character who has trouble defeating manes; however, swarms of them can overwhelm weaker characters. Getting into a corner or doorway where they can attack only one at a time is an effective tactic.
