A mastodon is a large, thick-skinned, herbivore that is not very common in the dungeon. While the mastodon does resemble the modern elephant, the modern elephant is not a direct descendant of the mastodon. The elephant that we know today is actually descended from the mammoth, the key difference between the mammoth and mastodon being the teeth. The mammoth (and elephant) have numerous tiny teeth embedded in a substance known as "cement", while the mastodon has large chewing teeth, suitable for grinding and tearing. The mastodon could be thought of, then, as an enormous elephant with threatening jaws - far more dangerous to the player than any elephant.
Although a very slow monster, mastodon can be tamed for the purposes of riding. Since it has a very good attack, it will make a strong melee-fighting pet. Consider zapping a tame mastodon (as well as any pet) with a wand of speed monster.
