Solid rock is a terrain type that is impossible to dig through (as opposed to a wall). Solid rock is used as a border that goes around a dungeon level in a rectangular fasion to prevent unneeded amounts of digging.
Attempting to dig into solid rock with a dwarven mattock will produce the sound 'Clash!'.
