The spellbook of light is among the easiest spells. After reading this, the scroll of light is even more useless.
At first, the spell is useful for practice, and to light one's way in the Gnomish Mines. Later this is a useful for anyone using a polearm or jumping, because you have to see to use a polearm or jump, and deeper levels of the dungeon are often dark. This spell also helps you save lamp oil during protracted battles, and it can be used to mark what areas you have already searched for the vibrating square. It also helps to light the area around every up stair case, because some monsters teleport to the up stairs and then fight, battles often happen there
Casting the spell of light has the same effect as an uncursed scroll of light: a circular area with 5 squares radius around your position while casting is permanently made lit.
