Are you stunned? If so, you have trouble walking in the direction that you intend. Often you have to wait (press [.], or maybe [s] to search) for this effect to wear off. Compare with confusion.

Warning: While stunned, if you press any of the movement keys [yuhjklbn] (or number keys for you numpad users), you might move in a different direction than you expect. If you are adjacent to your pet, you might attack your pet. The consequences are worse if you are adjacent to a peaceful monster.
