:Maximum attributes yes, but not starting attributes. In the early game a wizard with a pair of gauntlets of power is well suited for survival; they'll get more than just 3% to their spellcasting but it frees them up to practice dagger skills and obtain spellbooks while they wait for DSM and giant corpses to make not wearing metal an option. In the middle to late game it is possible for them to raise their strength and constitution to the max, but this will take longer than a combat-oriented class. Exercise only helps up to 18 STR, not the racial maximum (except elves, of course), and wizards get less exercise than melee classes, even with boulder training, on top of their lower starting values.

Question

When wearing Gauntlets of Power, do you continue to exercise your base strength? (At base strength 11, I expected to see at least at least 1 bump in the last 5000 turns...)

I bet you do. I know that eating giant corpses increases base strength even while wearing the gloves. Addps4cat 16:21, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, compare attrib.c#172 where it refers to A_BASE(A_STR) to dothrow.c#85 where it checks mjollnir against just A_STR. I could be wrong though. Addps4cat 16:39, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

"Even though gauntlets of power are made of metal, high-level wizards with high intelligence may still want to wear them, as they'll send their naturally-weak strength up to a whopping 25 while only adding a 3% or 4% failure chance to spells."

Naturally-weak strength? Maximum attributes are not affected by your role, only by your race; the role will only affect initial strength, and strength is easy to exercise all the way to the maximum. 720 15:21, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Maximum attributes yes, but not starting attributes.
Of course, I imagine that the writer of that sentence had elven spellcasters in mind, as they cannot reach 1000 carrying capacity without GoP. -- Qazmlpok 23:24, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
