[[Wand]]s comprise 4% of all randomly-generated items in the main dungeon, 6% in containers, 5% on the Rogue level, and 8% in Gehennom. There is a 2.5% chance that a randomly-generated wand will be a wand of nothing.

A wand of nothing does absolutely nothing, whether zapped, engraved with, or when broken, even though it will ask you for a direction when zapped.

This makes it problematic to identify. The best method is to combine engrave-testing with price-testing, or to use a scroll or spell. The only other wand with base price 100 is the light, which is very easy to identify, and safe to zap / engrave with. It could also be identified by elimination once the wands are known that produce no message when engraving.

Strategy

  • As one would expect from the name, they are nearly worthless. Worse than useless, in fact, as they also get in the way of identifying other wands. The one potential use of a wand of nothing is as polyfodder in an attempt to get other wands.
