Gnoll is a monster attribute in some variants of NetHack that indicates when a monster should be considered a gnoll. It has many effects, including determining monster starting inventory and determining whether the actions of the player character constitute cannibalism or same-race sacrifice.

The monsters that are considered gnolls, as well as the macro used to represent the attribute, vary depending on the variant.

GnollHack

Gnolls are fierce hyena-headed humanoids. They are proficient
in using flails and crossbows, and possess an excellent sense
of smell. They ordinarily hunt small game such as small lizards
and rats, but occasionally favor larger animals. Some evil
gnolls are known to worship a demon lord called Yeenaghu.
