Finding the trap

Sometimes, I "hear a thud", but when I walk over every room tile of the level, no trap is there. What is happening? -Tjr 18:34, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Later, I used save-scumming and explore mode to read a confused scroll of gold detection, and there was definitely no polymorph trap on that level. But I am sure I had "You hear a thud." Can that message be generated in any other way? -Tjr 21:08, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
You hear a thud when "a monster has stepped on a polymorph trap (or a lycanthrope has changed into its animal form) out of your sight and become too small for its body armor, thus dropping it." I would imagine that this would also happen for a potion or wand of polymorph (as well as the mentioned lycanthropes). DemonDoll 13:27, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

guaranteed polytraps, odds of finding some

  • Are there guaranteed polytraps in the game? I know of one in the wizard quest locate level, but you can't reach it until you get permission from the quest leader.
  • It's the only guaranteed polytrap in the entire game.
  • What are the odds there is at least one easily accessible polytrap? The wizard quest home has ~60% chance of at least one polytrap. What are the numbers in the Gnomish Mines: for an individual level and for the entire branch? Tjr 15:15, June 1, 2010 (UTC)

Low-resource ways to find a polytrap

  • Check with ESP for unusual monsters
  • travel with a horde of pets
  • have your pet leashed
  • go where they are abundant: the lower mines, or the wizard quest (home) if applicable
  • Somehow engineer the presence of many weak, intelligent monsters - they'll jump onto the trap, identifying it

Better suggestions are welcome. This list is geared toward the early midgame if you don't have any sure-fire method. Conducts are a concern. Tjr 04:51, August 28, 2010 (UTC)

The Big Room is also a good place to look for polytraps. If you have it, zap secret door detection to find them. Otherwise, just step on every tile, marking them off on a screen shot in an image editor. --Tjr 05:35, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

removing it

You can also dig down on the polymorph trap with a pick-axe, unless on an undiggable level

Undiggable levels still permit you to dig pit, it's just you cannot turn a pit into a hole. --Tjr 00:35, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
