Reading the source, iron shoes or low boots only protect you 40% of the time rather than the 50% originally claimed.

If you are wearing iron shoes or low boots, there is a 50% chance the xan will "prick the exposed part of your leg"; if it doesn't, there is a 20% chance that it will prick through your boot; if not, it scratches your boot. The first two results have the same damage. In total:
