The Apple of Discord is an artifact that appears in xNetHack. It is chaotic, and its base item is an apple made of gold.
Generation
The Apple of Discord can be given to any chaotic hero as a sacrifice gift.
Description
While carried, The Apple of Discord boosts the effects of conflict while they are active from any source, but only does so for a chaotic hero that is crowned. Invoking The Apple toggles hungerless conflict on or off. The Apple of Discord can be eaten like any other apple, and doing so grants intrinsic conflict as eating a ring of conflict does.
The Apple of Discord has text engraved on it that can be read, even while blind; doing so prints that it reads "Tei Kallistei" and breaks illiterate conduct.
Origin
The Apple of Discord (Ancient Greek: μῆλον τῆς Ἔριδος) was a golden apple dropped by Eris, the goddess of strife, at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis in the Greek myth of the Judgement of Paris. Eris had become disgruntled over being excluded from the wedding, and in retaliation tossed the apple - which was inscribed Καλλίστη (Kalliste, sometimes transliterated Kallisti, "for the most beautiful one") - into the wedding party. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each claimed the apple, with Paris of Troy appointed to select the recipient. After being bribed by both Hera and Athena, Aphrodite tempted him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen of Sparta. Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite, thus indirectly causing the Trojan War.
In common parlance, the apple of discord is the core, kernel, or crux of an argument, or a small matter that could lead to a bigger dispute.
