In NetHack, some monsters are considered kebabable, and a hero gains a +2 to-hit bonus when attacking them using any weapon using the spear skill.[1]

List of kebabable monsters

The following monster classes are kebabable:[2]

Strategy

A monster's kebabable status rarely comes into play for most characters, even those that favor and can train skill in spears - it can help with training spears in early stages of the game by using them against hostile naga hatchlings, but most other monsters that qualify are usually encountered at a point where to-hit is not as much of a problem or priority even with an unskilled weapon.

History

In NetHack 3.4.3 and previous versions, including variants based on those versions, weapons using the javelin skill receive the same +2 to-hit bonus. NetHack 3.6.0 merges the javelin skill into the spear skill.

Origin

Kebab, kabob (North American), kebap, or kabab (Kashmir), is a type of roasted meat that originates from Western Asia, with many popular forms of kebab around the world, including the skewered shish kebab and the doner kebab with bread. Kebabs consist of cut up or ground meat, sometimes with vegetables and various other accompaniments according to the specific recipe - they are typically cooked on a skewer over a fire, hence the association with the spear in NetHack, though some kebab dishes are oven-baked in a pan, or prepared as a stew such as tas kebab.
