When the player character dies and leaves a corpse a grave is created with the tombstone bearing the character's name and manner of death. Graves can only occour on an open, non-trapped floor square.

I have a screenie of a tombstone on dungeon level 2. According to other spoilers this should not be possible because no bones files are created for dungeon levels 1 to 3. -- PraetorFenix 04:37, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

I have a grave on dungeon level 2; it says "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" when I walk over it -- unsigned from 62.254.0.38
Random graves, like the Beetlejuice ones, are not from bones files and do not represent dead NetHack players. Meanwhile, when you die, a gravestone will always appear at the end of your game (unless you disable it), regardless of whether or not NetHack created a bones file. There is even a special room, the graveyard, that contains both tombstones and undead monsters. I have not found any such room recently, except at the Valley of the Dead which has multiple such areas. --Kernigh 04:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
