A yellow mold, F, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. The yellow mold is a type of mold that is sessile and lacks limbs, eyes or a head like other molds.
A yellow mold has a passive attack that stuns the attacker for some turns depending on the attacker's level, which can trigger when it is attacked in melee and not killed.[1][2] Yellow molds possess poison resistance.
A yellow mold corpse is poisonous to eat. Eating a yellow mold corpse or tin has a roughly 1⁄15 chance (7%) of granting poison resistance, and will always cause hallucination when finished.
Generation
Randomly generated yellow molds are always created hostile.
Strategy
Yellow molds are not overtly dangerous for the hero if they are attentive: attacking one carelessly in melee will cause them to be stunned for a while, and attempting to move while stunned risks the hero stepping into nearby traps or attacking and even killing their pet. Pets can be stunned by attacking a yellow mold as well, but due to how stunning works for monsters they will almost never attack the hero as a result. Any ranged attack can kill a yellow mold easily without risk.
History
The yellow mold first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.
Encyclopedia entry
Mold, multicellular organism of the division Fungi, typified
by plant bodies composed of a network of cottony filaments.
The colors of molds are due to spores borne on the filaments.
Most molds are saprophytes. Some species (e.g., penicillium)
are used in making cheese and antibiotics.
