The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.
Level temperature is a flag that specifies whether a level is "hot", "cold", or neither. It affects the following things:
- whether potions are at risk of being destroyed from heat when dropped on the ground
- monster creation; monsters with cold resistance appear more often in cold levels and monsters with fire resistance appear more often in hot levels
- how likely it is that a ray of cold will freeze a wall of lava into a regular wall
Levels with a defined temperature
Levels that are flagged as hot include:
- all levels in Gehennom, unless otherwise overruled (see below)
- the Plane of Fire
Levels that are flagged as cold include:
- a "cold hell" filler that can appear in Gehennom
Levels that are flagged as temperate (neither hot nor cold) include:

- It is hot here.
- You entered a hot level from a level that was not hot.
- It is cold here.
- You entered a cold level from a level that was not cold.
