Guard Farming

I don't know if anyone has tried this before, but here is a fun way you can farm without any puddings. To do this, enter a vault, wait for a guard to get in, wait until he turns hostile, then kill him. Guards can carry some nice wands and scrolls, but be careful, killing a guard while they are still peaceful carries an alignment penalty which and mess up your record pretty bad.

Wouldn't vault guards go extinct if you stayed there indefinitely? Also what tunnel, if any does the guard generate behind him on appearance?- this is handy information to know if you are going to use your wands--PeterGFin 17:23, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

Vault.c, line 226 and Source:Makemon.c#makemon look much like guard creation increments the born counter, but does not respect extinction. -Tjr 17:51, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
The extinctionist spoiler confirms this. -Tjr 17:55, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

Merge with Vault?

Currently this page has rather a lot of overlap with vault. Given that guards never appear outside of vaults, perhaps this page would be better as a section of that page, with redundant information eliminated? -Ion frigate 09:17, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Throwing your gold at the guard

I fixed it since the info here made it seem like throwing your gold at the guard was the same as returning the gold you found at the vault, but in fact doing so was a bribe attempt, and tossing an insufficient amount of gold at him (unlikely unless you don't throw all the gold you just found at the vault) will anger him immediately ("That's not enough, coward!"). Maybe this could be considered an oversight by the developers. Why would a vault guard accept bribe, especially from the vault gold, since he already has access to that gold? --Jundavr (talk) 18:09, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Late answer no one asked for, but guards are effectively reskinned soldiers in a lot of aspects, right down to sharing the same "mercenary" code that governs bribing. I've noted as much in the thoroughly rewritten article.

To address the above discussions all at once: I've also removed the merge template that was added all those years ago - it was much easier to "cut the knot" and correct the topic drift. As far as the farming deal, I'll address all that shortly after this message. Inform me if there's any oversights. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 01:17, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
