Forum:Version of NetHack Wiki for classic 3.4.3
Hay fellow dungeoneers, and Merry Christmas!
I'm used to using this wiki for doing runs of NetHack 3.4.3. As pages have been getting updated for the 3.6 series, it's become a bit confusing to tell which information is only valid for the newer versions. I tried some of the 3.6 releases and even ascended a barbarian in one of them, but I just didn't find it very enjoyable. This new NetHack is noticeably more difficult and more restrictive in what the game allows you to do. As much as I really do enjoy the quality of life improvements in 3.6.x, I dislike most of the gameplay alterations, particularly the severe nerfing of Elbereth and the ruined version of Mine Town.
So, I'm moving back to "classic" 3.4.3 and am hoping that somewhere there's an earlier version of this wiki, or at least a fairly comprehensive spoiler compendium for this beloved version that remained unchanged for 12 years. Anybody know? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shining Armor (talk • contribs)
Edit: Thanks for the responses guys! I've noticed occasional differences in the information between this wiki and the old one (for example, different % chances to obtain poison resistance from eating black puddings) Might be good if all such variances are noted explicitly in any page that they would appear in, kind of like how the Minecraft wiki lists differences between Java and Bedrock editions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shining Armor (talk • contribs)
- This is probably something that we editors could do better on this wiki as we update pages for new versions, by documenting changes between versions in the History sections. Many of our pages do note changes between versions, but not all of them. But it happens that there is a 3.4.3-only wiki, though that wiki is now deprecated: the old NetHack Fandom wiki should still be all 3.4.3 stuff simply because nobody has been keeping it updated after this wiki's community forked from it over a decade ago. It's possible that there are inaccuracies that have been fixed on this wiki but not there though. Cathartes (talk) 07:10, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- I should also note that 3.4.3->3.6.x changes aren't *that* big of a deal in most cases. You're already aware of the big ones like Elbereth, and for other cases you can just read the significant changes for each version starting with those listed at NetHack 3.6.0, and keep them in mind while reading articles here; it's probably better than reading an out-of-date ad-infested wiki. Things like monster stats are still pretty much the same. Cathartes (talk) 15:14, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, such is the onward march of time - it esp. hasn't been kind to Wikia, what with the kind of organizational rot that's taken over what used to be an actually-decent farm in the past decade.
- Generally, as Cathartes noted we already document stuff in the History section as it is - the semi-implicit assumption that NetHack and thus the wiki wouldn't move from 3.4.3 is the root of a not-small amount of "structural debt" that's been picked up as well, along with the (very relative) dearth of active editors, so there's simply A Lot to sift through and clean up as we go. When we have all the information at least properly updated from 3.4.3, though, I may give some thought to 3.4.3-specific sub-articles: there'd be at least some justification for it given how many variants (including the still-maintained dNetHack family) build off its foundation, so it's worth at least a larger discussion policy-wise. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 15:26, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
