An artifact is a rare and unique object. NetHack players like to wish for artifacts (using wand of wishing). Some players sacrifice to their god because gods sometimes provide artifacts as gifts.
Note: The standard English spelling is "artefact" but both Nethack and RGRN use "artifact" uniformly.
