Priests (and in SLASH'EM, Undead Slayers) start with cloves of garlic in their inventory.
Garlic is acceptable food for pets; you can use it to tame horses and feed herbivores[1].
If you polymorph into an undead monster (not only a vampire), then eating garlic will make you vomit[2].
