Intelligent monsters can be generated with attack wands; this includes both very weak monsters, and very powerful wands - the extreme case of which is the Gnome With A Wand of Death, a proverbial unfair way to die. Such well armed creatures can appear very early on when the player has no means of defense, most often in the Gnomish Mines.
The Gnome With The Wand Of Death, or GWTWOD appeared in Dudley's dungeon.
