A grappling hook is a tool that is also a weapon. When unidentified, it is an iron hook.

You can apply a grappling hook to a location up to one square away to achieve various effects: grabbing an item on that square, dragging yourself to a spot (or out of a trap), dragging a small monster to you, or accidentally hitting yourself (doing 10-19 points of damage). The effect that occurs is randomly chosen, unless you are at least skilled in flail; in this case, you may choose one of the first three effects to attempt. If skilled in flail, you have a 50% chance of getting your choice; if expert, you have a 95% chance of getting your choice.

But as for Queequeg -- why, Queequeg sat there among them --
at the head of the table, too, it so chanced; as cool as an
icicle. To be sure I cannot say much for his breeding. His
greatest admirer could not have cordially justified his
bringing his harpoon into breakfast with him, and using it
there without ceremony; reaching over the table with it, to
the imminent jeopardy of many heads, and grappling the
beefsteaks towards him.
