A metallivore is any creature that can consume metal; these include:
Rock moles and xorns can eat any item made of iron, copper, silver, gold, platinum, or generic metal. Rust monsters can only eat iron objects, because the others are not subject to rust.
Sometimes players will polymorph themselves into metallivores so that they can gain intrinsics from eating jewelry.
Messages
When you hear a crunching sound in the dungeon, it means there is a monster which is eating metal[1]. Examples of these are the rock mole or the umber hulk. This sound appears when creatures are eating an object made of either iron or mithril[2].
