A newt is one of the lower-level NetHack monsters, usually appearing on the first few floors.

Eating a newt corpse sometimes gives the message "You feel a mild buzz." When this happens, your energy or maximum energy is increased.

Newts are featured prominently in Dudley's dungeon.
