Wearing a ring of shock resistance gives you shock resistance. Unlike other rings, it is immune to electric damage, e. g. when a monster zaps you with a wand of lightning or a trapped chest explodes[1].
Using one in the early/mid-game is common, especially when facing enemies with wands of lightning, but as soon as a source of reflection is found it's better to remove it, keeping it ready for an emergency such as being engulfed by a energy vortex.
