The scroll of gold detection detects gold on the current level. This includes gold pieces, gold golems and any gold hidden in containers, buried, or embedded in rock. A blessed scroll will also detect gold rings.

Reading scrolls of gold detection while confused, however, has a very different and useful effect. If the scroll was non-cursed, all traps on the level will be revealed to the player. If the scroll was cursed, all traps on the level will be marked with a $ as if the scroll was detecting gold. If there weren't any traps on the level, if the player was a Beginner you receive the message "You have a strange feeling for a moment, then it passes"; otherwise, the message "Your toes stop itching" if you have toes. If you are polymorphed, replace "toes" with an appropriate extremity.
