Shaman Karnov, @, is the Caveman quest leader. He shares a name with a recurring character in several video games produced by Data East. The first Karnov game released for arcades in 1987 (and later for the NES and many personal computer systems) received an overwhelmingly positive review by D&D's Dragon magazine editorial staff, noting the video game's pivotal role in popularizing computer gaming [1]; given the popularity of the game and its being contemporaneous with NetHack, it is very likely that Shaman Karnov (as well as Karnov being a possible name for randomly-generated ghosts) is named in reference to this early gaming icon.
