Shaman Karnov

Shaman Karnov, @, is the Cave Dweller quest leader. He is a strong, omnivorous human that can be seen via infravision.

Shaman Karnov has a strong weapon attack and will attempt to cast one clerical monster spell during each of his turns.

Generation

Shaman Karnov is always generated as peaceful, and is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.

Shaman Karnov resides within the co-aligned temple in the most accessible northern cavern of the Caveman quest's home level, and is placed next to the altar during level creation.[1]

Shaman Karnov is always generated with +5 leather armor and a +5 club.[2]

History

Shaman Karnov is introduced with most other quest leaders in NetHack 3.1.0. From this version to NetHack 3.6.7, including some variants based on those versions, Shaman Karnov lacks a starting inventory and has much lower stats: 12 speed, an MR score of 30, a monster difficulty of 22, and a single 2d4 weapon attack. Angering or killing the quest leader also causes the game to become unwinnable in these versions, since the hero will either lose access to the magic portal that leads into their quest branch or else lose access to the lower floors of the quest.

NetHack 5.0.0 makes a major change to Quest mechanics via commit 20cbadcf: angering and/or killing quest leaders no longer makes the game unwinnable, and Shaman Karnov and other quest leaders are given increased stats and additional equipment to compensate.

Origin

Karnov is the username of DevTeam member Mike Stephenson, and may also appear as one of the default names for ghosts in NetHack.

Variants

NetHack variants based on versions prior to NetHack 5.0.0 often make Shaman Karnov and other quest leaders stronger than they are in those versions to accommodate the variant's changes to the Quest and its entry mechanics, and some of these changes are later incorporated into NetHack 5.0.0 itself.

SporkHack

In SporkHack, Shaman Karnov is buffed significantly from NetHack 3.4.3: his difficulty is increased to 24, his speed becomes 15, his MR score becomes 90, and he has a 4d10 weapon attack and will attempt to cast a 2d8 clerical monster spell during each of his turns. He also gains flight, sleep resistance, poison resistance and stoning resistance.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, Shaman Karnov retains his statistics from NetHack 3.4.3, and always generates with a random piece of armor and a random weapon, each with an enchantment from +1 to +6.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Shaman Karnov retains his statistics from NetHack 3.4.3 and gains the ability to see invisible, as well as intrinsic speed like his quest guardian allies and other cavepeople monsters at or above level 7. All 10 points of his effective AC are in the protection category.

Shaman Karnov is always generated with a blessed +7 club, a blessed +5 Leo Nemaeus hide, and a blessed +5 set of dragon scale mail in a random color (with an equal probability of each color).

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, Shaman Karnov's stats are identical to NetHack 5.0.0, though his monster difficulty remains at 22.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, Shaman Karnov's stats and resistances are improved from the NetHack 3.6 series, and are identical to those of SporkHack minus the difficulty increase and flight.

Shaman Karnov +5 'plain' armor and a +5 club. If The Sceptre of Might is successfully wished for by a non-Caveman, there is a xx+1 chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of a hostile Shaman Karnov generating adjacent to the character with the artifact in his possession.

All of the above information also applies to Hack'EM.
