Splint mail is a form of body armor. It provides MC1. It's almost as heavy as a plate mail, and compares poorly with a mithril-coat.
Samurai start with a rustproof splint mail. As an odd side effect, when the player is a Samurai, any random splint mails generated on level 1 at the start of the game will also be rustproof.
