NetHack 5.0.0 is the 37th public release of NetHack and the 33rd by the DevTeam.

A user has suggested improving this page or section as follows:

"This page currently describes a set of changes made to what was previously NetHack 3.7.0, an unreleased development version. Now that NetHack 5.0.0 has been released, this article should reflect that release version."

Availability

NetHack 5.0.0 is currently available as an official release - source code can be found on Github. Official binaries for Windows, MS-DOS and Amiga are available on the official website.

It can also be played on the public servers nethack.alt.org and Hardfought.

Significant changes

The list of notable changes in NetHack 5.0.0 include:[1]

Level generation

  • Themed rooms generate in the Dungeons of Doom.
  • Gehennom levels are significantly more interesting, with terrain variation, lava, some cavernous filler levels and random prefabricated areas.
  • Most special levels can generate mirrored: horizontally, vertically, or both at once.
  • Three new Big Room designs.
  • The Castle will no longer generate master liches or arch-liches at level creation.
  • The Castle chest contains a potion of gain level in addition to a wand of wishing.
  • Orcus-town generates with a magic lamp or magic marker.
  • The throne in Vlad's Tower does not vanish until it gives a wish, but its negative effects are much more severe than an ordinary throne.
  • A number of extra beneficial items, especially potions of healing, generate in the early game.

Monsters

  • Four new monsters: displacer beast, gold dragon, baby gold dragon and genetic engineer.
  • You can displace peaceful monsters aside, like you can do with a pet, with some exceptions (shopkeepers, clerics, quest leaders, the Oracle, and guards). Sleeping and paralyzed monsters cannot be displaced.
  • You can no longer displace pets (or peacefuls) into hazardous terrain or traps, or out of a trap they are trapped in.
  • Any level a demon lord is on, within Gehennom, is a no-teleport level. Their lairs are no longer permanently no-teleport, and permit teleportation after the demon is gone from that level.
  • Monsters can remove items from non-locked containers. They can also pick up and carry around containers, notably the chest in the Castle containing the wand of wishing. Monsters with keys can additionally unlock and open locked containers.
  • Monsters that are scared but which you have cornered will still attack.
  • Summon nasties can no longer create monsters of equal or higher difficulty than the caster (preventing e.g. arch-liches or Archons from summoning more of themselves).
  • Monsters can zap a wand of undead turning at you in order to animate corpses in your inventory.
  • Monsters can gain a limited set of intrinsics resistances from eating corpses like the hero can.
  • Peaceful demon lords that become hostile if you wield Excalibur also become hostile if you wield Demonbane.
  • Many of the non-unique demons gain special properties, passive effects, or abilities.
  • Pets will not eat corpses that make them polymorph, unless they are starving or on the verge of becoming untame.
  • You can obtain temporary intrinsic acid resistance and stoning resistance by eating certain monsters.
  • Conflict requires the affected monster to see the hero, and higher charisma increases the odds it will affect a monster.
  • A sphere's active explosion attack is now a 3x3 explosion which hits multiple squares and can destroy items.
  • Covetous monsters may warp to either the upstairs or the downstairs to heal.
  • Most monsters no longer death drop food items.
  • Monster species that would reasonably be expected to have gendered names now visibly distinguish between individuals of different genders (dwarf ladies in addition to dwarf lords, etc.)

Objects

Role changes

  • A few roles have special new methods of gaining experience.
  • The fedora is lucky for Archeologists.
  • Obtaining Excalibur via dipping in a fountain is much less likely for non-Knights, and practically more difficult for Valkyries, who no longer start the game with a long sword.
  • Wizards no longer have a Luck based bonus for writing unknown spellbooks; instead, they automatically learn the appearances of books as they advance their skills in spell schools.

Other

  • A wide array of accessibility improvements, mostly along the lines of messages, options, and commands that precisely describe where things are happening on the map and what monsters they are happening to.
  • Amnesia no longer causes you to forget maps and object identities. It instead makes you forget skill training and spells.
  • The mysterious force hits a character less often as the total number of levels they've been sent back by the force increases.
  • Sources of poison no longer have a chance of instakilling the player (but can still often remove a large amount of hit points at once).
  • New conducts: pauper, permadeaf, petless, and no rule breaking in Sokoban.
  • Anti-magic fields are much deadlier to characters with magic resistance.
  • Some magical traps explode when destroyed and can be destroyed from a distance by zapping cancellation at them.
  • The map can be configured to draw its symbols from Unicode.
  • Item destruction from elemental sources can be mostly prevented by having the extrinsic resistance to that element or by wearing a dwarvish cloak; failing any external protection, weaker attacks don't destroy as many items as stronger ones.
  • Engravings are now visible on the map from a distance.
  • Natural hit point recovery is reduced at higher levels.
  • Luck gains from sacrificing are limited by the value of the monster sacrificed, meaning you can't max out your luck by sacrificing a lot of low-difficulty monsters.
  • Gehennom levels (and the Plane of Fire) are "hot", which can automatically destroy potions dropped onto the ground.

The adventurer

The player may choose from these roles and races:

Role Races Alignments
Archeologist human, dwarf, gnome Lawful, Neutral
Barbarian human, orc Neutral, Chaotic
Cave Dweller human, dwarf, gnome Lawful, Neutral
Healer human, gnome Neutral
Knight human Lawful
Monk human Any
Cleric human, elf Any
Ranger human, elf, gnome, orc Neutral, Chaotic
Rogue human, orc Chaotic
Samurai human Lawful
Tourist human Neutral
Valkyrie human, dwarf Lawful, Neutral
Wizard human, elf, gnome, orc Neutral, Chaotic

All classes permit male and female adventurers, except the Valkyrie which must be female.

The adventurer has experience, hit points, magical energy, armor class, alignment, and the six major attributes. He or she may advance to experience level 30.

The initial pet is a little dog for Cavemen, Rangers, and Samurai, a kitten for Wizards, a saddled pony for Knights, and a random choice of a kitten or little dog for all others (or the user's choice in his options).

Dungeon features

The main trunk of the dungeon begins at level 1, where the game begins, and proceeds down stairs to Medusa's Lair and the Castle. From there, it is necessary to enter a trap door to the Valley of the Dead. Further stairs down eventually lead to the invocation level. Performing the invocation ritual at the vibrating square opens the stairs to the Sanctum.

With the Amulet of Yendor in hand, the adventurer may ascend from level 1 into the Plane of Earth; thence s/he may proceed through magic portals to the planes of Air, Fire, and Water, and thence to the Astral Plane. Offering the Amulet of Yendor on the correct high altar wins the game.

Along the way, one will encounter these branches and special levels:

To win the game, it is necessary to complete these tasks:

Special rooms are:

NetHack 5.0.0 is also the first version to feature themed rooms, rooms with nonstandard shapes or contents which generate in the Dungeons of Doom but which are not the same as special rooms.

Special dungeon features are:

Traps are:

A wand of wishing is guaranteed in the Castle, in its modern position, protected by Elbereth, a cursed Scroll of scare monster, and a chest.

Bestiary

NetHack 5.0.0 currently introduces four new monsters, the displacer beast, genetic engineer, gold dragon and baby gold dragon. These are shown in boldface.
