Jellyfish

From NetHackWiki

A jellyfish, ;, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. The jellyfish is a slithy sea monster that has tentacles in place of defined limbs and lacks a head, being closer in anatomy to jellies than to other sea monsters.[1][2][3] Like all sea monsters, jellyfish are amphibious and capable of swimming and hiding in water, and they become scared and lose HP while stuck on land. Jellyfish are the only monster form to not produce a message when a monster polymorphs into one.[4]

A jellyfish has a poisonous sting attack that can drain strength. Jellyfish possess poison resistance.

A jellyfish corpse is poisonous to eat, and eating a jellyfish corpse or tin has a 15 chance of granting intrinsic poison resistance.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

Per commit ca99dfae, jellyfish and other non-eel sea monsters are no longer considered slithy, which is done in order to give proper messages for the hero seeing an aquatic monster hide underwater.

Generation

Jellyfish are not randomly generated, and normally-placed jellyfish are always generated hostile.

Three jellyfish are generated at set locations on the first and second maps of Medusa's Island at level creation, and two jellyfish are generated at random locations on the third and fourth maps.

Two are generated at random locations in Juiblex's swamp at level creation.

At least four jellyfish are generated on the Plane of Water.

Strategy

Jellyfish move at an incredibly low 3 speed, and their sting poses no real threat to a mass majority of heroes at the point they are normally encountered.

History

The jellyfish first appears in NetHack 3.3.0.

Origin

Jellyfish, also known as sea jellies or simply jellies, are mainly free-swimming marine animals that are members of the subphylum Medusozoa under the phylum Cnidaria—some few species are anchored to the seabed by stalks instead of being motile. Jellyfish have an umbrella-shaped main body made known as the "bell" with a collection of trailing tentacles on the underside, and they move through open water by propelling themselves with pulsating contractions of the bell; the tentacles are armed with stinging cells and may be used to capture prey or to defend against predators. These stingers can also injure humans: Thousands of swimmers worldwide are stung every year, with effects ranging from mild discomfort to serious injury or even death.

Jellyfish are found all over the world, from surface waters to the deep sea, and large and often colorful jellyfish are common in coastal zones worldwide. Jellyfish have been in existence for at least 500 million years, if not possibly 700 million years or more, making them the oldest multi-organ animal group. They have a complex life cycle: the form most people are familiar with is normally the sexual phase, or the "medusa", which produces planula larvae that disperse widely and enter a sedentary polyp phase, which may include asexual budding, before reaching sexual maturity.

Jellyfish are eaten by humans in certain cultures. They are considered a delicacy in some Asian countries, where species in the Rhizostomeae order are pressed and salted to remove excess water. Australian researchers have described them as a "perfect food", being sustainable and protein-rich but relatively low in food energy. When conditions are favorable, jellyfish can form vast swarms, which may damage fishing gear by filling fishing nets, and sometimes clog the cooling systems of power and desalination plants which draw their water from the sea.

Variants

GruntHack

In GruntHack, the jellyfish's difficulty is lowered to 4.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, three jellyfish are randomly placed in the moat of the first alternate layout for the Castle at level creation.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, jellyfish and other sea monsters can be randomly generated if a level has water and a water square is selected as a spot for random monster generation, and will be generated on such floors at level creation.

Jellyfish are primordials, they are no longer slithy and their difficulty is lowered to 4. Their sting is given a different damage type that inflicts intense pain along with the normal poisonous effects: this causes monsters to lose movement points, and causes the hero to scream in pain for a few turns.

Six jellyfish are placed randomly in the swampy area within the lair of Juiblex at level creation if it is generated as the first Abyss level.

Six jellyfish are placed randomly in the waters throughout the lair of Demogorgon at level creation if it is generated as the third Abyss level, as well as the lair of Dagon if it is generated as the third Abyss level.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, jellyfish can generate on levels in the Gnomish Mines that have water running through them at level creation.

Two jellyfish are generated within the waters of Gollum's Cave in Goblin Town at level creation.
