Lord Carnarvon, @, is the Archeologist quest leader. He is a strong, omnivorous human that can be seen via infravision, and he can also tunnel through walls with a digging tool like Archeologist heroes and the students under his watch, though this is highly unlikely to be witnessed in practice.
Lord Carnarvon has a single strong weapon attack, and will attempt to cast a mage monster spell during each of his turns.
Generation
Lord Carnarvon is always generated as peaceful, and is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.
Lord Carnarvon resides within the College of Archeology on the Archeologist quest's home level, and is placed on the throne in the center-most room during level creation.[1]
Lord Carnarvon is always generated with a +5 fedora and a +4 bullwhip.[2]

Lord Carnarvon:
| |
| Reference | NetHack 3.6.7 - src/monst.c, line 2833 |
Lord Carnarvon is introduced with most other quest leaders in NetHack 3.1.0. From this version to NetHack 3.6.7, including some variants based on those versions, Lord Carnarvon lacks a starting inventory and has much lower stats: 12 speed, an MR score of 30, a monster difficulty of 22, and a single 1d6 weapon attack. Angering or killing the quest leader also causes the game to become unwinnable in these versions, since the hero will either lose access to the magic portal that leads into their quest branch or else lose access to the lower floors of the quest.
NetHack 5.0.0 makes a major change to Quest mechanics via commit 20cbadcf: angering and/or killing quest leaders no longer makes the game unwinnable, and Lord Carnarvon and other quest leaders are given increased stats and additional equipment to compensate.
Origin
Lord Carnarvon is a fictionalized version of George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, an English aristocrat and the 5th Earl of Carnarvon (26 June 1866 – 5 April 1923) who is best known as the financial backer of the search for Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings and its subsequent excavation. He passed due to an illness causes from an infected mosquito bite, which was often attributed to the curse of the pharaohs.
Variants
NetHack variants based on versions prior to NetHack 5.0.0 often make Lord Carnarvon and other quest leaders stronger than they are in those versions to accommodate the variant's changes to the Quest and its entry mechanics, and some of these changes are later incorporated into NetHack 5.0.0 itself.
SporkHack
In SporkHack, Lord Carnarvon is buffed significantly from NetHack 3.4.3: his difficulty is increased to 24, his speed becomes 15, his MR score becomes 90, and he has a 4d10 weapon attack and will attempt to cast a 4d8 mage monster spell during each of his turns. He also gains flight, sleep resistance, poison resistance, and stoning resistance.
UnNetHack
In UnNetHack, Lord Carnarvon retains his statistics from NetHack 3.4.3, and always generates with a +5 fedora, a random +4 weapon and three random items.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Lord Carnarvon has an effective AC of 10, with no points in any type of AC, and his speed is reduced to 10. As an archeologist monster, he has intrinsic speed, stealth and automatic searching.
Lord Carnarvon is always generated with a blessed +7 pistol and 26-31 blessed +7 bullets, which constitute the only type of randomly generated firearm that most Archeologist heroes will see outside of areas such as the Sea—any such character looking to train the skill is better off utilizing those sources, finding bones or else wishing for them.
SpliceHack
In SpliceHack, Lord Carnarvon's stats are identical to NetHack 5.0.0, though his monster difficulty remains at 22.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, Lord Carnarvon's stats and resistances are improved from the NetHack 3.6 series, and are identical to those of SporkHack minus the difficulty increase and flight.
Lord Carnarvon always generates with a +5 fedora and a +4 bullwhip.
If Xiuhcoatl is successfully wished for by a hero other than an Archeologist, there is a 1⁄x chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of it being created successfully—if successful, Lord Carnarvon will generate as the hostile owner of the artifact, placed adjacent to the hero with the artifact in his possession.
All of the above information also applies to Hack'EM.
