A magic harp is a type of magical musical instrument that appears in NetHack. It is tonal and made of wood, and appears as just a harp when unidentified.

Generation

Magic harps are created with 1–8 charges.[1]

Description

Applying a magic harp with charges tames monsters around you and exercises your dexterity.[2] Applying a magic harp with no charges left produces the same effects as a normal wooden harp, exercising dexterity and pacifying nearby nymphs with a dexterity-based chance.[3][4] The radius of effect for a charged magic harp depends on your experience level:

As of commit 231bd75, magic harp taming works the same as the read non-cursed scroll of taming and the spell of charm monster, and may increase the tameness of already-tame monsters. Additionally, commit 094da9b allows magic harps to properly pacify angry shopkeepers.

The magic harp can be charged an unlimited number of times; it gains 1d4 charges with an uncursed scroll of charging, or 2d4 with a blessed scroll, and can hold a maximum of 20 charges.[5]

Strategy

The magic harp is a valuable tool for taming and pacifying monsters and operates at the same range as a non-cursed scroll of taming at experience level 4; this potentially saves magic marker ink on writing a scroll of taming. It can also be easily distinguished from a wooden harp by playing one or the other, especially near a monster. However, while it can affect monsters at a further range than the scroll of taming, it pales in comparison to reading the non-cursed scroll while confused.

As a tonal instrument, a magic harp can also be used to play the passtune to enter the Castle.

The magic harp's ability to increase tameness can be used to make inediate pets more viable, as their apport typically cannot be raised by feeding them.

History

The magic harp first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

In variants that import the advent calendar patch, a magic harp is among the various items that may appear as the Christmas present on day 24.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, a wooden harp can be upgraded into a magic harp.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, the Troubadour role starts with knowledge of the magic harp and all other musical instruments. Their quest artifact, The Lyre of Orpheus, is an neutral artifact magic harp that can be used to play any song via the musicalize spell skill; it grants magic resistance when carried, causes all pets on the level to follow you between levels, and can be applied or invoked for taming. Each time it is applied or invoked, the Lyre will speak a random rumor dependent on its beatitude: the rumor will be true if the Harp is blessed, false if cursed, and either if uncursed.

DynaHack

In DynaHack, applying a magic harp will formally identify it.

NetHack Fourk

In NetHack Fourk, sylph Healers start each game with a magic harp.

SlashTHEM

In addition to SLASH'EM details, SlashTHEM includes the Troubador role (known in SlashTHEM as the Bard), which retains knowledge of the magic harp and all other musical instruments; The Lyre of Orpheus is now a wooden harp.

Musicians start each game with a magic harp among their magical instruments; their quest artifact, The Harp of Harmony, is a lawful artifact magic harp that grants drain resistance, warning, and stealth while carried, and can be applied or invoked for taming. When applied or invoked, the Harp will speak a random rumor based on its beatitude: true if blessed, false if cursed, and either if uncursed.

The Harp of Lightning, the Electric Mage quest artifact, is a neutral artifact magic harp that grants acid resistance, warning and teleport control while carried, and can be invoked to summon a tame air elemental (or sometimes a greater air elemental).
