Gauntlets of fumbling are a pair of magical gloves that appear in NetHack. They are made of leather, and have a randomized appearance when unidentified - the default appearance associated with them is a pair of "padded gloves".[1]

Generation

Gauntlets of fumbling have a 910 chance of generating cursed with a non-positive enchantment.[2]

Player monsters on the Astral Plane that do not generate with a war hammer have a 78 chance of generating with a random pair of gloves and a 15 chance of those gloves being gauntlets of fumbling, for an effective 740 chance (17.5%).[3]

Description

While worn, gauntlets of fumbling grant 1 base AC and extrinsic fumbling, along with a -3 to-hit penalty while firing from bows.[4] Fumbling causes the hero to trip over items and make noise, among other effects.

Strategy

Main article: Fumbling

Gauntlets of fumbling are one of multiple reasons why randomly wear-testing items to identify them is a bad idea. Cursed gauntlets of fumbling are considered a minor trouble by the hero's god.[5][6]

History

Gauntlets of fumbling first appear in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, a cursed -4 pair of gauntlets of fumbling is generated within the Chamber of Junk in the Lawful Quest at level creation. This also applies to SlashTHEM.

GruntHack

In GruntHack, gauntlets of fumbling set a character's dexterity to 6, as low dexterity in general is changed to also cause intermittent fumbling.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, gauntlets of fumbling grant 0 base AC, 1 base DR and fumbling while worn.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, upgrading gauntlets of fumbling can create gauntlets of dexterity and vice versa.
