Hippocrates

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Hippocrates, @, is the Healer quest leader. He is a strong, omnivorous human that can be seen via infravision.

Hippocrates has a single weapon attack and will attempt to cast two clerical monster spells during each of his turns. Like his attendants and Healer heroes, he possesses poison resistance.

Generation

Hippocrates is always generated as peaceful, and is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.

Hippocrates resides in the center of the Temple of Epidarus, the Healer quest's home level, and is placed on the throne within the room during level creation.

Hippocrates is always generated with a +5 silver dagger.

History

Hippocrates is introduced with most other quest leaders in NetHack 3.1.0. From this version to NetHack 3.6.7, including some variants based on those versions, Hippocrates lacks a starting inventory and has much lower stats: 12 speed, an MR score of 40, a monster difficulty of 22, and only a single 1d6 weapon attack. Angering or killing the quest leader also causes the game to become unwinnable in these versions, since the hero will either lose access to the magic portal that leads into their quest branch or else lose access to the lower floors of the quest.

NetHack 5.0.0 makes a major change to Quest mechanics via commit 20cbadcf: angering and/or killing quest leaders no longer makes the game unwinnable, and Hippocrates and other quest leaders are given increased stats and additional equipment to compensate.

Origin

Hippocrates of Kos (Greek: Ἱπποκράτης ὁ Κῷος, translit. Hippokrátēs ho Kôios; c. 460 – c. 370 BC), also known as Hippocrates II, was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the "Father of Medicine" in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field: the use of prognosis and clinical observation, the systematic categorization of diseases, and the formulation of humoral theory. The Hippocratic school of medicine revolutionized ancient Greek medicine, and established medicine as a profession and a discipline distinct from the other fields it had traditionally been associated with (theurgy and philosophy).

Hippocrates is also credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinical medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians through the Hippocratic Corpus and other works. Though commonly portrayed as the paragon of the ancient physician and credited with coining the still-relevant Hippocratic Oath, the achievements of the writers of the Hippocratic Corpus, the practitioners of Hippocratic medicine, and the actions of Hippocrates himself were often conflated—very little is known about what Hippocrates himself actually thought, wrote and did.

Variants

NetHack variants based on versions prior to NetHack 5.0.0 often make Hippocrates and other quest leaders stronger than they are in those versions to accommodate the variant's changes to the Quest and its entry mechanics, and some of these changes are later incorporated into NetHack 5.0.0 itself.

SporkHack

In SporkHack, Hippocrates is buffed significantly from NetHack 3.4.3: his difficulty is increased to 24, his speed is increased to 15, his MR score becomes 90, and he has a 4d10 weapon attack and the ability to cast a 2d8 clerical monster spell during each of his turns. He also gains flight, sleep resistance and stoning resistance.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, Hippocrates retains his statistics from NetHack 3.4.3, and always generates with four random wands, two random scrolls, and a silver dagger with an enchantment ranging from +1 to +4.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Hippocrates retains most of his statistics from NetHack 3.4.3, but he has an effective AC of 10 with no points in any category, and he is given the see invisible property along with every form of elemental resistance in the game (excluding magic resistance). Like a Healer hero, his quest guardian attendants and other healer monsters, he will also have poison resistance and immunity to sickness from his 'role' as well.

Hippocrates is always generated with a blessed +5 healer uniform and a +7 scalpel.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, Hippocrates's stats are identical to NetHack 5.0.0, though his monster difficulty remains at 22.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, Hippocrates's stats and resistances are improved from the NetHack 3.6 series, and are identical to those of SporkHack minus the difficulty increase and flight.

Hippocrates always generates with a +5 dagger.

If The Staff of Aesculapius is successfully wished for by a non-Healer, there is a xx+1 chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of a hostile Hippocrates generating adjacent to the character with the artifact in his possession.

All of the above information also applies to Hack'EM.

Encyclopedia entry

Greek physician, recognized as the father of medicine. He is believed to have been born on the island of Cos, to have studied under his father, a physician, to have traveled for some time, perhaps studying in Athens, and to have then returned to practice, teach, and write at Cos. The Hippocratic or Coan school that formed around him was of enormous importance in separating medicine from superstition and philosophic speculation, placing it on a strictly scientific plane based on objective observation and critical deductive reasoning.
