Generation
Wizards may be given a wand of enlightenment as the random wand in their starting inventory.[1]
Wands of enlightenment make up 3⁄200 (1.5%) of all randomly-generated wands. General stores and "quality apparel and accessories" shops can sell wands of enlightenment.
A wand of enlightenment generates with 11 to 15 charges.
Description
Zapping the wand exercises wisdom and grants enlightenment, displaying the current status and properties of the hero.[2] Zapping the wand or attempting to engrave with it will auto-identify the wand.
Applying a wand of enlightenment to break it will have no effect.[3]
Strategy
The wand of enlightenment is incredibly rare and while it can be easily done without, it is nonetheless an immensely useful for revealing the hero's properties (which are not normally displayed and are generally inferred from messages) and whether or not it is safe to pray. It can also informally identify the properties of worn items, such as certain rings, amulets and armor: After taking off unknown items and zapping the wand to display your character stats, you can pull out whichever items you want to test that do not auto-identify when worn, ideally wearing them one at a time, and the zap the wand again to see which properties were added or changed as a result. This can also be used to determine if an unidentified gray stone is a luckstone based on any enlightenment messages about luck.
History
The wand of enlightenment first appears in NetHack Plus, and makes its vanilla debut in NetHack 3.3.0.
Variants
SpliceHack
In SpliceHack, a wand of enlightenment can be created at a furnace by combining a wand of opening with a wand of light.
