Generation
Randomly-generated baby crocodiles are always created hostile. A baby crocodile can grow up into a crocodile, and eggs laid by crocodiles will hatch into baby crocodiles.
Strategy
Baby crocodiles are very slow-moving, and their bite is not too threatening for most characters unless they have poor AC or else are low on health. Escaping from a baby crocodile is trivial, outside of severe encumbrance or poor luck with monster generation (e.g. a wand of create monster or scroll of create monster surrounds a character with hostiles).
History
The baby crocodile first appears in NetHack 3.0.7.
Variants
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, quaffing from a toilet has an effective 2⁄45 chance of generating a baby if done in the form of a canine, and a 2⁄9 chance of generating one otherwise, unless baby crocodiles are extinct or genocided in either case.[1] Breaking a toilet by kicking it has a 1⁄3 chance of generating 2-6 baby crocodiles.[2]
UnNetHack
In UnNetHack, the Tourist role's default pet is a baby crocodile.
dNetHack
In dNetHack and notdNetHack, baby crocodiles may be generated as minions of Offler.
Drow characters can tame baby crocodiles and ride them as steeds.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, two baby crocodiles are generated in the Sewers of Waterdeep map of Mines' End at level creation.
All growth stages of crocodile move much faster when underwater than they do on land.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, the Corsair has a 1⁄5 chance of starting with a baby crocodile named Snappy as their default pet.
Hack'EM
Hack'EM has the same odds of generating baby crocodiles from a toilet as in SLASH'EM, and generates two baby crocodiles in the Sewers of Waterdeep map for Mines' End at level creation, as in EvilHack.
