NetHack 3.2.0

From NetHackWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

NetHack 3.2.0 is the 20th public release of NetHack and the 16th by the DevTeam. Mike Stephenson announced it to the Usenet newsgroups rec.games.roguelike.announce and rec.games.roguelike.nethack in April 1996.[1]

Availability

NetHack 3.2.0 has no fully authoritative source. The DevTeam ceased to distribute NetHack by Usenet after NetHack 3.1.3. It was made available at UUNet, but no longer exists there; the main distribution site was by FTP at linc.cis.upenn.edu, but that site no longer accepts anonymous logins.

A patch file for 3.2.0 to 3.2.1 is available from the Free Software Foundation - this patch applied cleanly in reverse (with tiny modifications) to the NetHack 3.2.1 tarball from the FSF recreates a 3.2.0 version.

Ali Harlow has a NetHack 3.2.0 distribution at his website, and the code is also available on NetHackWiki for browsing and annotation at the NetHack 3.2.0 source code article.

Izchak Miller, 1935-1994

Izchak Miller was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a founding member of the DevTeam. Due to his passing in 1994, the NetHack 3.2 Series was dedicated to his memory.

A special game-end tombstone gave the dedication, and is still available as a compile-time option by defining NH320_DEDICATION:[2]

Significant changes

NetHack 3.2.0 is a major release.

Notable changes in NetHack 3.2.0 are:

  • Graphical tiles are supported for the first time, in the ports for X11, Amiga and MS-DOS. Support for tiles in Windows NT is partially present but disabled.
  • The spellcasting system is revised. Previously, spellbooks could be read only once, successfully or not, and spells had charges, rather like wands, which could be stored indefinitely but required relearning once exhausted. Now, spellbooks can be read several times, and spells cast until magical energy is exhausted; but the spells eventually time out.
  • Inventories and item choices can be made by menus.
  • Izchak now tends the lighting shop.
  • Many smaller changes and bug fixes.

The adventurer

The player may choose from these roles:

Role Alignment
Archeologist Lawful
Barbarian Neutral
Cave(wo)man Lawful
Elf Chaotic
Healer Neutral
Knight Lawful
Priest(ess) Random
Rogue Chaotic
Samurai Lawful
Tourist Neutral
Valkyrie Neutral
Wizard Neutral

All classes permit male and female adventurers, except the Valkyrie which must be female.

The adventurer has experience, hit points, magical energy, armor class, alignment, and the six major attributes. He may advance to experience level 30.

The initial pet is a little dog for Cavemen and Samurai, a kitten for Wizards, and a random choice of the two (or the user's choice in his options) for all others.

Dungeon features

The main trunk of the dungeon begins at level 1, where the game begins, and proceeds down stairs to Medusa's Lair and the Castle. From there, it is necessary to enter a trap door to the Valley of the Dead. Further stairs down eventually lead to the invocation level. Performing the invocation ritual at the vibrating square opens the stairs to the Sanctum.

With the Amulet of Yendor in hand, the adventurer may ascend from level 1 into the Plane of Earth; thence s/he may proceed through magic portals to the planes of Air, Fire, and Water, and thence to the Astral Plane. Offering the Amulet of Yendor on the correct high altar wins the game.

Along the way, one will encounter these branches and special levels:

To win the game, it is necessary to complete these tasks:

  • Escape from the dungeon.

Special rooms are:

Special dungeon features are:

Traps are:

A wand of wishing is guaranteed in the Castle, in its modern position, protected by Elbereth and a chest.
