The second function is less obvious, but arguably much more useful. This is the unturn dead function. It can be used to revive corpses and rejuvenate eggs. If a corpse is too old to eat or #offer, you could zap it, then kill the monster again. If your pet dies (in a manner that leaves a corpse), you could bring it back to life, although you still might need to re-tame it.

This wand can be unambigously identified when you zap it at yourself: "You shudder with dread." This is a fairly risk-free method of testing a wand that does nothing when you engrave with it, unless you happen to be undead (in which case you will be stunned), or are carrying a dangerous corpse (cockatrice being the most likely example).

A Wand of Undead Turning is a Utility wand with two functions. Zapping an undead monster deals 1-8 points of damage and will cause the creature to flee from you. This damage is doubled if you are a Knight carrying the Magic Mirror of Merlin.

Alternatively, the wand can be used to unturn dead[1], reviving corpses and rejuvenating eggs, though limitations apply.

Identification

First try engrave testing. If no message or effect is generated, it's fairly safe to zap it at yourself - getting Stunned while Undead, having a corpse in your inventory reanimated, or getting the message "You shudder with dread" unambigously identifies the wand as Undead Turning.

Strategy

 • If a corpse is too old to eat or #offer, zapping it with a Wand of Undead Turning then re-killing the monster will reset the rot timer.
 • If your pet dies (in a manner that leaves a corpse), zapping it with the wand could bring it back to life - although be warned it might need to be re-tamed.

Generation

Wands comprise 4% of all randomly-generated items in the main dungeon, 6% in containers, 5% on the Rogue level, and 8% in Gehennom. There is a 5% chance that a randomly-generated wand will be a Wand of Undead Turning.
