Hello message

When you start a new game of NetHack, or restore a saved game[1], or receive mail[2], or enter a shop[3], you are greeted:

"Hello <player>, welcome to NetHack! You are a <alignment> <gender> <race> <Class>."
"Hello, <player>! Welcome to <Shopkeeper>'s <shop type>!"

For some roles "Hello" is replaced by a translated greeting[4]:

Role Origin Message Situation
Knight Olde English
Salutations
Samurai Japanese
Konnichi wa
Irasshaimase
shopkeeper
Tourist Hawaiian
Aloha
Valkyrie Norse
Velkommen
Hallo
mail daemon

Goodbye message

When ending the game[5] or being drained of a level[6], you get the message

Goodbye, <player> the <role>...
Goodbye level <level>.

There are also translated versions of "Goodbye"[7]:

Role Origin Message
Knight Olde English
Fare thee well
Samurai Japanese
Sayonara
Tourist Hawaiian
Aloha
Valkyrie Norse
Farvel
