Forum:Piously neutral Monk Expelled by neutral Quest Leader - Why?
Playing a Neutral Monk game:
- Version 3.6.6-0 windows build.
- Currently at level 30,
- Quest completed,
- Became Crowned :(
- Descended to bottom of gehennom,
- completed all branches except the top of Rodney's tower,
- most ascension kit complete,
- wished for the other Neutral quest artifacts,
- never changed alignment.
I Drank Enlightenment prior to revisiting Quest branch temple because I intended to Pray for a spellbook - Still showed Piously Neutral, Max Luck, and Safe to Pray.
But when I entered the temple, I chatted to the Quest leader for the flavour text and although I got a friendly greeting, it was followed by summon insects, an attack, and expel from the quest as if I had failed the alignment test... The portal is now gone and I can only get into the Quest Branch by Branch Porting.
Another Enlightenment potion afterwards showed no change from before the Excommunication.
Does anyone have any theories what might have triggered this? --— Preceding unsigned comment added by ManOfScience (talk • contribs) 2026-08-06T03:06:19

As for an answer, did you happen to have a source of conflict on that you forgot about? --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 08:53, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
(Thx for adding the sign that i forgot!)
Only source of conflict I have is a ring but it was inside the BOH ... This exile deeply perplexes me. Could it be because I ate a Wraith and 2 tins of storm Giant? I believed that the state Piously Neutral meant I had not gone too far. Maybe that's wrong?
Now it's that much harder now to squeeze the Quest branch for remaining ascension kit needs. Can the Abbot be pacified? ManOfScience (talk) 05:52, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Your alignment record doesn't really factor into this, since if you had failed the alignment test for the first time, you would've just been booted out, without the portal disappearing. Are you sure you haven't accidentally attacked any peaceful monsters within the guardians' sight? Anyway, you can pacify a Quest leader with a scroll of taming or a spell of charm monster. If you just need an altar, I think you can also just branchport from below into the bottom level of the Quest branch and convert the altar there (also, aren't both altars in the monk Quest unaligned? were you planning to convert the altar near the leader?) --Prowler (talk) 06:32, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip on coming in from below - I mostly want to use up all the Magic Traps, do sacrifices, and pray for Spellbooks; just to complete ascension kit.
It's definitely the first time I was booted out and I can't see unwittingly attacking a peaceful monster because following my #Chat command there was no message between "Greetings, honorable Master. It is good to see you again." and "The Grand Master summons insects."...
It occurred to me that it's possibly because one of my pets attacked the peaceful monsters. Could this do it?
ManOfScience (talk) 04:35, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- No, your pets attacking peacefuls wouldn't have caused it. The "Greetings, honorable Master. It is good to see you again." message is something that quest guardians say, not the leader, so it doesn't rule out the leader already being angry by the time of the incident; something must have angered him since the last time you've approached him. My money is still on the "accidentally hitting a peaceful" hypothesis. If you're playing on a public server, you can link your ttyrecs and I can give a more detailed look. --Prowler (talk) 13:10, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
Lacking other ideas, I have to assume that I failed to notice the "Are you sure you want to attack" warning, hit "y", and then mistook a guardian for the leader when I #chatted.
Sadly, I'm just playing a local copy so I may never know for sure :/
I'm grateful for the info you provided, though! . ManOfScience (talk) 04:11, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Wait - what if a monster or one of my pets had a Ring of Conflict on? Could that cause it?
ManOfScience (talk) 04:15, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Monsters won't wear that ring, and if I recall the code only accounts for the hero applying a source of the conflict property. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 12:35, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
I believe I have found a critical clue: When I sacrifice on a neutral altar, the message is "Your sacrifice is consumed in a burst of flame!" On the Sacrifice wiki page it says that message indicates the hero is chaotic. (and that a neutral hero would get a "plume of smoke") BUT, if I use the stethoscope it says I'm Piously Neutral. Potion of enlightenment also says Piously Neutral. . Are there 2 different senses of the term alignment? (In addition to the 3rd sense of alignment record?)
