The Thrashing Tulip Poplar, {, is a unique monster that appears in notdNetHack. It is an amphibious plant that is sessile like most other plants, but can still attack at a fairly quick pace.

The Thrashing Tulip Poplar has three polearm-range melee attacks and the ability to fire wooden spikes, and possesses poison resistance.

Eating the Thrashing Tulip Poplar's corpse or tin is likely to convey poison resistance.

Generation

The Thrashing Tulip Poplar is always generated hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

The Thrashing Tulip Poplar is encountered at the end of the Black Forest adventure branch.

The Thrashing Tulip Poplar drops The Poplar Punisher upon death if killed in a manner that would ordinarily leave a corpse.

The Poplar Punisher

The Poplar Punisher is an artifact quarterstaff that has +1d4 to-hit and +2d6 damage versus all monsters. When unidentified, it appears as a named "poplar branch".

Origin

The Thrashing Tulip Poplar is based somewhat on the Whomping Willow from the Harry Potter franchise. This may also be the reason that the Black Forest adventure branch contains several weeping willows.
