A rabid dog, d, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack and Hack'EM. The rabid dog is a small and carnivorous canine animal that is somewhat similar to a little dog, and it can be seen via infravision and has a tendency to wander while moving. In Hack'EM, rabid dogs cannot be made tame and may go berserk at less than 13 of their maximum HPeating rabid dogs is also considered cannibalism for a hero that has lycanthropy from a werejackal.

A rabid dog has a poisonous bite attack that drains constitution similar to a rabid rat, and possesses poison resistance.

A rabid dog corpse is poisonous to eat—eating the corpse or tin of one does not grant the aggravate monster intrinsic as eating domestic canines does.

Generation

Randomly generated rabid dogs are always created hostile.

Rabid dogs appear among the random d that are part of the first quest monster class for Infidels and make up 24175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Infidel quest. They also appear among the random d that are part of the first quest monster class for Samurai and make up 24175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Samurai quest.

In Hack'EM, rabid dogs appear in the same capacity for Infidels and Samurai. They also appear among the random d that are part of the second quest monster class for Yeomen and make up 6175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Yeoman quest.

Strategy

Rabid dogs are one of many early monsters in both EvilHack and Hack'EM that provide a nasty surprise for the uninitiated player: while weaker than a regular dog, it moves just as fast at 16 speed, and their poisonous bite has the same damage dice as that of the large dog and can fell an early hero. Remaining attentive is the best way to spot an approaching rabid dog, and even if the hero has poison resistance from their role or race, they should pick off the rabid dog as quickly as possible (if possible) before it can get into melee range.

Food that serves as a source of poison resistance in these variants grants partial intrinsics, with resistances from experience levels or extrinsic sources functioning as in NetHack, so the hero requires 35% poison resistance (or 25% in Hack'EM) to avoid instant death from the rabid dog's bite or any type of poison.

Origin

Rabies is a viral disease that causes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in humans and other mammals, and was historically referred to as hydrophobia or "fear of water", due to the symptom of panic when presented with liquids to drink. Other symptoms include fever and abnormal sensations at the site of exposure early on; these are followed by nausea, vomiting, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms appear, the result is virtually always death, regardless of treatment.

Symptoms usually appear 1-3 months after contracting the disease, with variance from less than one week to more than one year depending on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system. Rabies is caused by lyssaviruses, including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus, and is spread by infected animals to other animals or humans via bite, scratch, or saliva that comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose. Infected dogs are the most common source of rabies cases globally, with the Americas being a relative exception where bat bites are the most common source—canine-specific rabies has been eradicated in the United States, but southern and eastern Asian countries such as India and its surrounding countries are unable to treat wild canines or apply many preventative measures due to financial limitations.
