I found him in the gnome mines...— Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.121.25.111 (talkcontribs)

Probably some random monster stepped on a polymorph trap. This can generate practically any monster in practically any part of the dungeon. An excellent reason to spring any poly traps you find as soon as it's safe.--Ray Chason 20:21, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm looking at one now in dlvl 13. I don't see any ploymorph traps anywhere. Perhaps this is another Nethack 3.6.3 change? Davek (talk) 14:00, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Just because you don't see a polymorph trap doesn't mean there isn't one there, unless you used trap detection to rule it out. It could also be a monster that polymorphed on another floor and ended up there, a shapeshifter, or a bones floor. - Andrio Celos (talk) 14:03, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
True. I did have to handle a master mind flayer on that same level, so there must be a trap there somewhere. -Davek (talk) 15:16, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

It also could have been a wand or potion of polymorph (MMF sounds like it should be a polytrap) but a single high-level monster could always have been a potion. Also don't forget chameleons - just because it didn't leave a corpse doesn't mean it wasn't a chameleon. --EasterlyIrk (talk) 22:38, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
