Template:Variant-noversion

From NetHackWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This template places a small icon in the top right corner of an article to indicate that it is about a feature that appears only in NetHack variants, and is therefore unlikely to require revision when future versions of NetHack are released. See NetHackWiki:Next version for more information. This template should be placed at the bottom of the article.

If this is one of multiple top icons on a single page, specify an offset like this:

{{slashem-7E7}}
{{nethack-366|offset=1}}

so that the tags do not appear on top of each other.

This template was created as an equivalent of sorts to Template:Variant-343, since a number of pages about variant-specific features had started to proliferate that used Template:Nethack-366 or similar templates, meaning that when future versions of NetHack were released, those pages would be flagged as needing review and an update to the latest version template. In most cases, a new release of vanilla NetHack does not prompt a variant's author to make changes in such a way that would require updating its own feature pages. It doesn't make sense to continue the pattern by creating templates such as "variant-36" and "variant-37".

We could, in theory, create a whole set of version templates for every variant (like we already have for SLASH'EM), use them on variant pages, and update them when the variant releases a new version, but in practice there is probably not enough collective editor effort to keep a system of so many templates up to date. Instead, just use this template as a catchall.

This template is the general form of Template:Variant-343 and thus supersedes it, but there is no particular impetus to start switching the thousands of pages that currently use that template to this one.
