The carnivorous ape is a monster in NetHack. It is a strong, carnivorous animal and the more ferocious cousin of the ape. It has the ability to grab and hold a player, potentially crushing them to death.

Generation

Randomly generated carnivorous apes are always hostile.

Strategy

Carnivorous apes are as fast as an unburdened unhasted player, and begin to appear relatively early; they can deal a decent amount of melee damage, and their hug attack can leave the player vulnerable to other nearby monsters. Fortunately, they have no monster magic resistance and an unimpressive AC, making them very vulnerable to attack wands or scaring tools.
