A carnivorous ape, Y, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. It is a strong, carnivorous, humanoid animal and the more ferocious cousin of the ape. It has two claw attacks and the ability to grab and hold a player, potentially crushing them to death.

Generation

Randomly generated carnivorous apes are always hostile.

Strategy

Carnivorous apes are as fast as an unburdened unhasted player, and begin to appear relatively early; they can deal a decent amount of melee damage, and their hug attack can leave the player vulnerable to other nearby monsters. Fortunately, they have no monster magic resistance and an unimpressive AC, making them very vulnerable to attack wands or scaring tools.

History

The carnivorous ape first appears in NetHack 3.0.0, which introduces the apelike creatures.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, carnivorous apes and other apelike creatures are considered domestic animals, and can be tamed with bananas.

Aldo the gorilla had a plan. It was a good plan. It was right. He knew it. He smacked his lips in anticipation as he thought of it. Yes. Apes should be strong. Apes should be masters. Apes should be proud. Apes should make the Earth shake when they walked. Apes should _rule_ the Earth.
